The rules of the game are simple. All you have to do is find out which of the squares are shaded and which of them are not. The numbers printed on the sides of the rows and columns provide you with all of the information you need to shade the correct squares in each puzzle.
Each number represents the number of squares that are continuously filled in each row/column. A comma between the numbers represents AT LEAST ONE empty square in between shaded squares. The comma can represent more than one empty square.
For example:
So, in order to fill up the row above, we must first look at the numbers written on the left-hand side of the row. '2,1' simply means that 2 squares must be filled up continuously, followed by at least one empty square, and followed by a single, shaded square. Based on the information provided, this is what we get:
Consider another example:
Which of the 3 squares are we supposed to fill up? To find out, we need to look not only at the numbers provided for the row, but also at the numbers provided on the top of each column. By looking at the numbers above each column, we can then tell which squares need to be shaded:
